Description
HH Chest Rub
A gentle kiddies rub infused with eucalyptus, lavender, and a hint of peppermint essential oils to soothe and relieve tight chest, coughs & colds
Formulation and Texture:
A chest rub is a medicated ointment or balm typically featuring a petrolatum (petroleum jelly) or natural wax (like beeswax) base. This base gives it a greasy texture that allows it to be easily spread onto the skin.
Active Ingredients:
The core of a chest rub is a blend of aromatic and volatile compounds that create a powerful vapor. The most common active ingredients are:
1. Menthol: Provides a strong cooling sensation and is a cough suppressant and topical analgesic (pain reliever).
2. Camphor: Also acts as a cough suppressant and topical analgesic.
3. Eucalyptus Oil: A natural oil known for its respiratory benefits and as a cough suppressant.
Function and How It Works:
When applied to the skin, the rub warms up and releases medicated vapors. These powerful vapors are inhaled, primarily working to:
• Relieve Coughs: The active ingredients act as cough suppressants to help temporarily quiet coughs due to minor throat and bronchial irritation associated with a cold.
• Ease Congestion: While the rub does not technically “clear” mucus or open nasal passages, the strong aromatic vapors create a cooling sensation that stimulates nerve receptors in the nasal passages and throat, giving the perception of easier breathing and clearer airways.
• Soothe Minor Pains: The cooling effect of menthol and camphor also helps to temporarily relieve minor aches and pains in muscles and joints, which can be a secondary symptom of being unwell.
Application:
A thick layer of the ointment is typically rubbed onto the chest and throat, especially before bedtime, to allow the continuous inhalation of vapors for restful sleep. In some products, it may also be applied to the back or used in steam inhalation (by adding it to hot, not boiling, water).
